Watch two climbers do the same problem. One moves through it like a sentence. The other does it like a list: reach, stop, look, reset, reach, stop. They both get to the top, and one of them is exhausted.
The difference is rarely fitness. It is that one of them is connecting moves and the other is performing them one at a time, and every stop in between is a payment for no progress.
Why does my climbing feel jerky?
Because holding still on a hold is work, and starting from a standstill costs more than continuing something already moving. A climb made of twelve separate starts is more expensive than the same climb made of three connected sequences.
Then it compounds. Stopping pumps you, being pumped makes you grip harder, gripping harder tires you, and being tired makes you want to stop and think. That loop is why bad sessions get worse faster than they should.

Should I be climbing fast or slow?
Both, in different places, and knowing which is a reading skill as much as a movement one. Technical sequences want deliberate. Pumpy ground wants continuous, because every second deciding is a second your forearms pay for. Dynamic moves want full commitment, since hesitating halfway spends the energy and loses the momentum.
Rushing is not fluidity. Rushing is the same disconnected moves with less attention, which makes precision worse without making anything smoother.

Where are the stops actually coming from?
This is the part worth being honest about. Telling someone to climb more smoothly is useless if the reason they keep stopping is that they do not know where to go next. Pauses have three different causes and three different fixes.
You do not know what comes next, which is a reading problem. You are hesitating on a move you can do, which is commitment. Or your position is wrong so you have to reset, which is body position. Only the third one is really about movement.
