You fall off pumped near the top, come down, and someone says there was a rest at the third bolt. You have no memory of a rest. You were there, you climbed past it, and it did not register as anything.
This happens constantly and it has a simple cause. When climbers preview a route, they look for the hard bits. Almost nobody looks for the easy bits, so the rests are invisible even to someone standing still staring at the wall.
Why you miss them
Previewing is threat detection. Your attention goes to the section that looks hard, because that is what you are worried about. The consequence is that you build a mental map of a route made entirely of difficulties.
Then you climb it at one continuous pace, because your map has no stopping points on it. You arrive at the crux with forearms that have been working without a break for four minutes, and you fall off a move you can do.
The other reason is that most climbers are looking for the wrong thing. They are scanning for a big jug, and rests are usually not jugs.
What a rest actually looks like
A rest is a body position, not a hold. Specifically it is any position that takes significant weight off your arms.
Stems
Feet pressed against two opposing surfaces, in a corner or between volumes, so your legs carry you and your hands do almost nothing. The best rest available on most terrain that offers it, and completely invisible if you are looking for holds.
Straight-arm hangs
Any decent hold you can hang from with a locked-out arm. A straight arm is a skeleton doing the work rather than a muscle, and it costs a fraction of a bent-arm hold. This alone is worth learning properly.
Heel hooks
A heel hook on a good hold can carry enough of your weight that you can take a hand off entirely. On steep ground this is often the only real rest available.
Knee bars
Wedging a knee between two surfaces. When one is available it can be a complete no-hands rest, and they are almost always missed because they do not look like anything.
Foot ledges
Anywhere you can stand up straight with your weight over your feet. The most ordinary rest and the most overlooked, because it is not exciting.
The rest-only preview
Here is the drill, and it takes thirty seconds.
Preview the route once with a single instruction: find every place you could stop. Do not think about the sequence. Do not look at the crux. Just find the stopping points.
The first time you do this you will find rests on routes you have already climbed several times. That is the normal experience and it is a slightly annoying one.
Then do your normal read. Now your map has both difficulties and recovery on it, and you can pace the route instead of climbing it at one speed until you run out.
How to actually use one
- Get your weight onto your feet or your skeleton before you start shaking. Most people start shaking out from a position that is still costing them energy.
- Shake one arm at a time, low. Hanging the arm below your heart is what actually helps. Waving it above your head does not.
- Breathe out properly. People hold their breath through hard sections and arrive at the rest with shallow breathing, which slows recovery more than the pump does.
- Know when to leave. Recovery has diminishing returns. Once your forearms have stopped improving, staying longer just cools you down and gives your head time to talk you out of the next section.
Common mistakes
- Only counting full rests. Ten seconds and two shake-outs is worth having. Most rests are partial and climbers ignore them because they are not perfect.
- Resting on a bent arm. A bent arm is working. Straighten it or you are not resting, you are just pausing.
- Resting where you happen to be tired rather than where the rest is. The good position is usually a move or two before or after the point you feel like stopping.
- Staying too long. More time is not more recovery past a certain point, and it costs you commitment.
- Not previewing for rests at all. The one that causes all the others.
Where this fits in your progression
Rests start mattering the moment routes get long enough that endurance decides the outcome, which on a rope is around 5.10 and on boulders is really only on long circuits.
It is also one of the highest-return skills available to an intermediate climber, because it costs nothing physically. You are not getting fitter, you are spending less. Two climbers with identical fitness will have very different days if one of them sees the rests.
It pairs closely with grip efficiency, since the reason you need the rest is usually that you have been holding on harder than the climbing required.

- Rest-only preview. Read a route looking for nothing but stopping points. Do this before every attempt for two weeks and it stops being a drill and becomes a habit.
- Rest at every rest. Climb a route well below your limit and stop at every rest you identified, whether you need it or not. You are building the habit of noticing and using, not the fitness.
- Name them from the ground. Point at the rests before you climb and say what kind each one is: stem, straight arm, heel, foot ledge. Naming makes them stick.
The rest-only preview is the one that matters. The other two just reinforce it.

Why do I get pumped even on routes with rests?
Usually because you did not see them, so you climbed straight through at one pace. Climbers preview for hard moves and rarely preview for rests, so they arrive at the crux with nothing left despite having passed three chances to recover.
Do rests matter in bouldering?
Less, but not zero. Boulder rests are momentary: a stable position where you can reset your feet, take a breath, or shake one hand for two seconds before the crux. On longer problems and circuits that small reset is often the difference between sticking the last move and not.
