You had it worked out. You get to the crux, reach for the hold you have been thinking about, and it is nothing like you expected. Flatter, further, worse angle. You hang there for a second, try to make the sequence work anyway, and come off.
The problem was not that hold. It was that you brought exactly one plan to a situation that needed two.
Rigid beta is a fragile plan
Most climbers preview a route, find a sequence, and commit to it entirely. That works right up until something is different from what they expected, and then there is nothing to fall back on.
Stronger route readers do something different: they identify two or three viable ways through the hard section, even though they will only use one. That is not indecision, it is redundancy. When option one turns out to be wrong, there is somewhere to go that is not the ground.
The difference shows up in attempt counts. A climber with one sequence has to reset every time it fails. A climber with alternatives adapts mid-attempt and often sends on the go where the other person needed four more tries.
Why holds lie
It is worth knowing that this is not a reading failure on your part. Some of it is unavoidable.
From the ground you are looking up at holds, so you see their profile from below. An incut edge and a flat one look nearly identical from underneath. A sidepull viewed from twenty feet down can turn out to be a sloper when you are level with it. Distance is also compressed, which is why reaches are so often longer than they looked.
So expect surprises rather than treating them as evidence you read it wrong. The skill is not eliminating the surprise, it is having something to do about it.
Building alternatives on the ground
This is where the work happens, because thinking is cheap on the floor and expensive on the wall.
The two-options rule
Before every attempt at something hard, find a second way through the crux. Not a vague sense that there might be another way. A specific alternative: a different hand, a different foot, a different body position.
You will not use most of them. That is fine. The point is that generating alternatives is a habit, and habits are available under pressure in a way that improvisation is not.
Ask what changes if you are tired
A sequence that works fresh often does not work on your fourth go. Having a lower-percentage but less strenuous alternative in your pocket is what lets you send when you are worked.
Watch other people do it differently
The fastest way to see that multiple sequences exist is to watch someone shorter or taller than you climb the same problem. Their beta is not better or worse, it is a different solution to the same question, and seeing that regularly loosens up your reading.
Adapting while you are on it
When the surprise happens, the instinct is to freeze and then force it. Both are expensive. A better order:
- Get stable first. Find the best position available, get weight onto your feet, straighten an arm. You cannot think clearly while your forearms are screaming.
- Change one thing, not everything. Usually a foot. Moving a foot changes your reach and your direction of pull more than people expect, and it is cheaper than reversing to the last good hold.
- Go to your second option if you have one. This is the whole reason for having it.
- Accept a worse hold. A bad hold you can reach beats a good hold you cannot.
- Reverse if you have to, but treat it as a real choice rather than the default. Downclimbing to the last rest is often better than falling, and almost nobody practises it.
Attempt count as a diagnostic
If a problem is taking a lot of attempts, it is worth asking whether the sequence is wrong rather than assuming execution is.
The tell is repetition without change. Six goes at the same sequence, failing at the same place, in the same way. That is information: the sequence has been tested and it does not work for your body. Trying it a seventh time with more effort is the least likely thing to help.
The alternative is to deliberately change one variable, even one you are confident about. A different foot, a different hand, a different order. It feels like giving up on a plan you believe in, and it is usually what unlocks the problem.
Common mistakes
- Only ever finding one sequence. The root cause of everything else here.
- Forcing failed beta harder. If it has failed identically three times, effort is not the missing ingredient.
- Coming down automatically when surprised. Expensive, and often unnecessary.
- Treating other people’s beta as the correct answer. Their proportions are not yours. Their sequence is a data point, not an instruction.
- Never practising downclimbing. It is the skill that turns a lost attempt into a rest and another go.

This becomes important once problems have more than one plausible solution, which is roughly when you start projecting things rather than flashing them.
It is also the difference between climbers who plateau and climbers who keep moving. Rigid beta caps you at problems that happen to suit the first sequence you see. Flexible beta means the number of problems available to you keeps growing.

- Two ways up. Climb an easy problem twice using genuinely different sequences. Then a third time, differently again. It is harder than it sounds and it is the core drill.
- Banned hold. Climb a problem you know, with one hold removed. Forces a real alternative rather than a theoretical one.
- Downclimb everything. Climb up, then reverse it. Builds the skill that turns a failed attempt into a recoverable one, and it doubles your time on the wall.
- Copy someone else’s beta. Watch a climber of a different height do a problem, then do it their way. Uncomfortable and unusually instructive.
All of these belong on easy terrain. You are training adaptability, and adaptability does not develop while you are at your limit.

What do I do when my beta does not work mid-climb?
Have a second option ready before you leave the ground. If you are already on the wall with no alternative, get to the most stable position available, take the weight off your arms, and look for the nearest different option rather than trying to force the sequence you planned. Forcing a sequence that has already failed is how attempts get wasted.
Why does a hold feel different than it looked from the ground?

There is no correct number, but a high attempt count often signals a reading problem rather than an execution one. If you have tried the same sequence six times and it has failed six times, the sequence is probably wrong. Changing something usually beats trying harder.
