Your foot pops off a foothold you were standing on comfortably a second ago. You reach, the foot slides, and you are suddenly hanging off your arms wondering what happened to a hold that felt completely fine.
Here is the part most climbers get wrong: the foothold was fine. The thing that changed was not the hold or your shoe. It was where your weight went when you started moving.
What is actually happening when your foot pops
A foot stays on the wall because of friction, and friction depends on two things: how grippy the surfaces are, and how hard your shoe is pressed into the wall. The rubber and the hold are fixed. The pressure is not.
That pressure comes from your body weight, and specifically from where your centre of gravity sits relative to the foothold. When your hips are stacked over your foot, most of your weight is going straight down through your toe and into the hold. When your hips drift away from the wall, that pressure drops, and the amount of friction available drops with it.
So the sequence is not “the hold failed.” The sequence is: you started reaching, your hips moved away from the wall, the pressure through your toe dropped below what the hold needed, and then the foot slid.
This is why the failure almost always happens during the move rather than before it. Standing still, your weight is stacked and the hold is generous. The instant you reach, you change the geometry.
The test that tells you which problem you have
Get on the foothold and stand there without moving. If it holds you, the hold is adequate and your shoe is fine.
Now make the reach slowly, and pay attention to your hips rather than your foot. Most climbers find one of three things:
- Your hips swing out away from the wall as you extend
- Your hips drop, so your weight ends up behind your foot rather than over it
- You stop thinking about the foot entirely once your hand starts moving
All three do the same thing to the physics. Your foot did not fail. Your body left it behind.
If you want to be certain, film one attempt from the side on your phone. The hip drift is obvious on video and almost impossible to feel while you are climbing.
Why this gets worse on steep ground
On a slab, gravity pushes you into the wall, so your feet get pressure almost for free. On vertical ground it is neutral. On anything overhanging, gravity is actively pulling your body away from the wall, and the only thing keeping your feet on is tension you are generating yourself.
That is why climbers who are perfectly solid on vertical terrain suddenly cut feet on their first overhang. It is not a strength ceiling. It is that the terrain stopped doing the work for them and nobody told them.
It also explains why the fix feels like effort rather than technique. On steep ground, keeping your feet on is an active job you do continuously, not a thing that happens once when you place the foot.
How to fix it
1. Move your hips before you move your hand
The order most climbers use is: reach, then shift. That means there is a window in the middle of every move where your weight is in the wrong place and your foot is holding on with whatever pressure is left.
Reverse it. Settle your weight over the foot you are about to stand on, then reach. The move feels slower and uses less energy, which is a strange combination until you have felt it.
2. Keep your hips in, not just your chest
People hear “stay close to the wall” and pull their shoulders in while their hips stay out. Your hips carry most of your mass. They are the part that has to come in.
3. Keep watching the foot
Attention leaves your feet the moment your hand starts moving toward the next hold. Deliberately keeping some awareness on the weighted foot through the whole reach is most of the fix on its own.
4. Get your feet wider
A narrow stance gives you a small base of support, so small shifts in your hips carry your weight outside it. Wider feet, and feet outside your hands rather than under them, make the same body movement much less destabilising.
Common mistakes
- Blaming the foothold. If you can stand on it, it is adequate. Something else changed.
- Gripping harder to compensate. This is the automatic response and it makes things worse. Pulling harder with your hands lifts weight off your feet, which lowers the pressure that was keeping them on.
- Buying new shoes first. Fresh rubber buys you a small margin. It does not change where your weight is.
- Placing the foot well and then forgetting it. A good placement is the start of the job, not the end of it.
Where this fits in your progression
This is a foundational thing to understand and it stays relevant forever. Beginners meet it as random foot slips on easy terrain. Intermediate climbers meet it again the first time they get on a steep problem and their feet keep cutting. The mechanism is identical both times.
It also underpins a lot of other technique. Flagging works because it moves your centre of gravity back over your foot. Hip turns work for the same reason. Once you see foot pops as a hip problem, a lot of climbing technique stops looking like a list of tricks and starts looking like one idea.

- Quiet feet. Climb an easy route making no noise with your feet. Noise means you are dropping onto holds rather than placing and weighting them deliberately.
- Slow motion climbing. Take an easy problem and climb it at roughly a quarter speed. Slow removes momentum, which is what climbers unconsciously use to paper over bad weight transfer. If a move falls apart slowly, the position was always wrong.

Why do my feet keep slipping off good footholds?
Most of the time the foothold is fine and your hips are the problem. Friction depends on how hard your shoe is pressed into the wall, and that pressure comes from where your weight sits. When your hips drift away from the wall as you reach, the pressure through your toe drops and the foot slides off a hold you were standing on a second earlier. If you can stand on it still but it pops when you move, it is a body position issue, not a foothold issue.
How do I stop my feet from cutting loose on overhangs?
Keep your hips closer to the wall and keep tension from your hands all the way to your toes through the whole move, not just at the start of it. On steep ground gravity is already pulling your body away from the wall, so any moment you relax, your feet come off. Practise moving slowly on gentle overhangs and notice the exact point in the reach where you let go of the tension.
Is foot popping a strength problem?
Usually not. Standing on a foothold takes very little strength, which is why you can stand on the same hold indefinitely without moving. What fails is the position, and position is a skill. Getting stronger helps you hang on longer after your foot has already popped, but it does not stop the pop.
What is the quickest way to test whether it is my hips?
Get on the hold, stand still, and see if it holds. If it does, the hold is adequate. Then make the reach slowly and watch what your hips do. If they swing out or drop away from the wall before the foot goes, you have your answer. Filming one attempt on your phone makes this obvious in a way that feeling it never does.
Do better shoes fix foot pops?
New rubber gives you a slightly higher friction coefficient, so it buys you a small margin. It does not change where your weight is. A climber with worn shoes and good hip position will hold placements that a climber in new shoes with drifting hips will not.
