Most climbers have one way of standing on things. Usually it is heels up, slightly on the tiptoes, because that is what feels precise and it works well enough on the plastic edges you meet early on.
Then you get on a sloper or a volume, use the same foot position, and slide straight off. The foot was not careless. The angle was just wrong for what you were standing on.
Why heel height changes what your foot can hold
Two things decide whether a foot placement works: how much rubber is touching the hold, and which direction your force is going. Your heel height changes both of them at once, which is why it matters more than it sounds like it should.
Heel raised concentrates your weight onto a small patch at the front of the shoe and drives force downward and slightly inward, so the toe bites into an edge. Excellent on small edges. Poor on anything that needs surface area.
Heel dropped lays more of the sole against the surface and increases contact area, but it shifts your force vector backward, which takes pressure off the toe. Excellent on slopers and smears. Poor on defined edges, where it stops the shoe biting.
Neither is correct on its own. They are two settings, and the hold decides which one you want.
What to use on what
Small edges: heel slightly raised
You want your weight concentrated over the front of the shoe so the toe presses into the edge. Not full tiptoe, which puts the contact angle past the useful range and burns your calves. Just enough lift that the pressure is going through the front third of the shoe.
Medium holds and jugs: heel level
Nothing clever needed. Level distributes force evenly and is the most restful position, which matters more than it sounds when you are twenty moves in.
Slopers, volumes and smears: heel dropped
There is no edge to bite, so friction is all you have, and friction here comes from contact area. Dropping the heel lays more rubber down and puts your ankle in a stronger position. This is why keeping your heels low is standard slab advice and why it feels wrong to anyone who learned on gym edges.
Steep ground: heel raised, and expect to work
On overhangs you are on your toes because that is what lets you pull your hips into the wall. The cost is that keeping the foot on becomes an active job. This is the one case where the raised heel is not about the hold at all, it is about what the angle of the wall demands.
The tiptoe habit, and why it is so common
Gym climbing rewards tiptoes early. Set problems tend to have defined edges, tiptoes feel precise, and standing high gives you a bit more reach. So the habit sets, and then it comes everywhere with you.
Two tells that you have it. First, your calves fatigue before your forearms, which is unusual and means you are holding a high heel position continuously rather than resting on level feet. Second, you are noticeably worse on slab and slopers than your grade would suggest, because the one setting you have is the wrong one for that terrain.
The fix is not to swap tiptoes for dropped heels. It is to stop having a default at all.
Common mistakes
- Full tiptoe on everything. Past roughly thirty to forty degrees the contact angle stops helping you and your weight is on a tiny patch of rubber.
- Dropped heels on small edges. Feels stable because more shoe is touching, but the force goes backward instead of into the edge and the shoe stops biting.
- Setting the heel and leaving it. Heel height should change as your body moves over the foot, not just when you place it.
- Thinking of it as one adjustment. There are three usable positions, and picking between them is the skill.

This is an intermediate refinement rather than a beginner fundamental. You need to be placing your feet where you intend to first, which is the job of basic footwork drills. Once placement is reliable, heel angle is the next real gain available, and it usually shows up as suddenly being able to use holds you had been avoiding.

One drill covers it, and it is deliberately tedious:
- Hold-type circuit. Pick an easy route with a mix of edges, medium holds and smears. Climb it consciously setting the heel for each foot: raised on edges, level on medium, dropped on anything smeary. Say it out loud if that helps.
- One-setting laps. Climb the same easy problem three times, once with heels deliberately high throughout, once level, once dropped. You will feel exactly which holds each setting is wrong for, which teaches the mapping faster than being told it.
Both belong on terrain well below your limit. You are rewriting a habit, and habits do not rewrite while you are trying hard.
