Why Your Feet Cut Loose on Overhangs (And Why It Is Not Core Strength)

You get on the steep wall, pull onto the first holds, reach for the next one, and both feet swing off into space. You are suddenly hanging off your arms on a problem you could physically do, wondering whether you need a stronger core.

Probably not. What you need is tension, and tension is not the same thing as core strength. This is the single most common misdiagnosis in climbing, and it sends a lot of people to the gym floor to do sit-ups for a problem sit-ups cannot solve.

What body tension actually means

In climbing, tension means an active chain running from your fingers to your toes. Forearms, shoulders, back, abs, glutes, hip flexors, quads, calves. All of it engaged at once, holding your body rigid enough that force can travel through it.

That is different from what most people picture when they hear “core.” Your abs are one link. If your glutes are not firing, or your hip flexors are not pulling your knees in, the chain breaks in that spot and the whole thing goes slack, no matter how strong your abs are.

It is also active rather than passive. You are not hanging there being rigid by default. You are generating tension continuously, for as long as you are on the wall, and it costs energy the entire time.

Why your feet come off

A foot stays on a hold because of friction, and friction depends on how hard your shoe is pressed into the wall. On steep ground, the thing generating that pressure is you.

Gravity pulls on your centre of mass, which sits roughly at your hips. On an overhang it pulls your hips away from the wall, which creates a rotation around your shoulders. Your core and glutes have to resist that rotation to keep your hips in. If they stop, the hips swing out, the pressure through your toes vanishes, and your feet leave the wall.

The force required goes up sharply as the wall gets steeper. This is why the jump from vertical to a thirty degree overhang feels so much larger than the numbers suggest, and why climbers who are solid on vertical suddenly look like beginners on steep ground.

Notice what is not in that explanation: the foothold. The hold did not get worse. You stopped pressing on it.

The banana, and why you cannot feel it

The visible version of tension loss is a shape climbers call the banana: arched lower back, hips dropped away from the wall, body sagging between hands and feet.

In that shape almost your whole body weight hangs off your arms. Your feet are barely loaded, so they contribute nothing and come off at the first excuse. And it is exhausting, which is why moderate overhangs pump people out far faster than the difficulty of the moves would predict.

The difficult part is that it does not feel like sagging from the inside. It feels like hanging on. Almost nobody identifies this in themselves without seeing it, which is why filming one attempt from the side is the single most useful thing you can do here.

The three ways tension fails

1. Hips sag on a static position

The most common one. You get established, settle, and quietly stop holding the tension. Your hips drift down and out, and the next move pulls your feet off.

2. Tension releases at the moment of commitment

This one is partly psychological. On a big move you build tension, then let go of it at exactly the instant you commit, so your legs turn into dead weight instead of driving. The reach falls short and your feet cut. Climbers who can pull hard but cannot dyno are usually losing tension mid-move, not lacking power.

3. Attention leaves your lower body

You reach for a hard hold, all your focus goes to your hand, and your legs relax without you noticing. On vertical this shows up as feet slowly sliding down good holds. On steep ground it shows up as feet coming off entirely.

How to fix it

Film one attempt

Side on, phone propped against a bag. Watch where your hips are relative to your feet at the moment things fall apart. This is not optional, because the internal sensation is unreliable.

Think hips up, not core tight

“Tighten your core” is vague and most people respond by clenching their abs, which does very little. “Pull your hips toward the wall” is a specific instruction your body can act on, and it recruits the glutes and hip flexors that were actually missing.

Lower your centre of gravity

Bent knees and hips closer to your feet reduce how much tension you need in the first place. Climbing steep ground with straight legs and high hips makes the job harder than it has to be.

Get your feet wider

A wide base of support makes your body far more stable against rotation than a narrow one. Feet outside your hands rather than stacked underneath them cuts the tension demand noticeably.

Practise on gentle overhangs

Twenty degrees, on holds well below your limit, moving slowly. You need enough spare attention to notice what your hips are doing, and you do not have that on something hard.

Common mistakes

  • Training the core off the wall and expecting transfer. Planks build the capacity to hold one position. Climbing needs tension held while your limbs move independently. The overlap is smaller than it looks.
  • Assuming it is a strength ceiling. If you can do the moves with your feet on, strength is not what is missing.
  • Blaming the footholds. Same test as always: stand on it without moving. If it holds, the hold is adequate.
  • Gripping harder when the feet start to go. Pulling harder with your hands lifts weight off your feet, which is exactly backwards.

Where this fits in your progression

Tension becomes the limiting factor the moment you start climbing anything steep, which for most climbers is somewhere around V2 to V4 indoors. Before that, terrain does the work for you and you can get a long way without ever generating much tension deliberately.

It is also the thing that keeps mattering. Every level above this asks for more of it, and the climbers who look effortless on steep ground are not relaxed, they are holding a lot of tension very efficiently.

It pairs directly with footwork. Foot pops on vertical terrain come from the same physics, just with gravity working with you instead of against you.

How to train this

Three drills target tension directly, all on terrain below your limit:

  • Slow overhang laps. An easy steep problem climbed at about a quarter speed. Slow removes momentum, which is what climbers use to hide poor tension. If a move falls apart slowly, the tension was never there.
  • Feet-on lock-offs. Get established on a steep problem, lock off one hand, and hold it for five seconds without your feet moving. Repeat on both sides. You are training the chain to hold under a static load.
  • Hip-to-wall traverses. Traverse a gentle overhang with one instruction only: keep your hips as close to the wall as you can. Ignore everything else. It teaches the position faster than thinking about muscles does.

Two sessions a week for a month is enough to feel a difference, and it will show up first as your feet staying on rather than as anything feeling stronger.

Why do my feet cut loose on overhangs?

Almost always because your body tension released, not because the foothold failed. Keeping your feet on steep ground requires an active chain of tension from your fingers through your shoulders, core, glutes and legs down to your toes. The moment any link in that chain goes slack, your hips swing away from the wall, the pressure holding your feet on disappears, and your feet come off. If you can stand on the hold without moving, the hold is fine.

Will planks and sit-ups stop my feet cutting?

Not directly. Planks train your core to resist collapse in one fixed position on the floor. Climbing asks you to hold tension while your limbs move independently, at changing angles, for the length of a route. They are different jobs. Time spent on steep climbing with deliberate attention on your hips does more than any amount of floor work.

What is the banana shape in climbing?

It is what your body makes when your hips drop away from the wall on an overhang: arched back, hips sagging, shoulders and feet the only points still working. It transfers almost all your weight onto your arms, which is why it feels so tiring. Most climbers doing it have no idea until they see a photo or video of themselves.

Why can I hang on the holds but not move my feet?

Because static hanging and moving are different demands. Hanging still lets you use a comfortable position. Moving one limb means the other three have to hold the tension that limb was contributing, and on steep ground that jump in demand is where the chain breaks.

How steep does a wall have to be before this matters?

It starts mattering slightly past vertical and gets harder fast. On a slab, gravity presses you into the wall and your feet get pressure almost for free. On vertical it is neutral. Past that, gravity is actively pulling your hips away from the wall, and the force you need to resist it climbs quickly with the angle.
