Which Chicago gym fits your climbing style
- Long routes and lead: First Ascent Avondale (60 ft), Movement Lincoln Park (56 ft) or First Ascent West Loop (50 ft). Practice straight arms to save your forearms.
- Solo rope sessions: First Ascent Avondale and West Loop list auto belays.
- Volume bouldering: Block 37, Humboldt Park and Uptown each list 150 to 200+ boulders, and Wrigleyville has 11,000 sq ft. Read the three techniques for V4 and V5 when you plateau.
- Technical footwork: any bouldering gym works. Spend a session on 17 footwork drills and smearing.
- Steep power: if your feet cut on overhangs, read why your feet cut loose on overhangs and why you barn door and how to stop it.
Beginner tips for Chicago gyms
- Sign the waiver online before your first visit.
- Start with bouldering: no partner or belay check needed. For ropes, read Belaying 101 and how to belay with a GriGri on top rope or take an intro class.
- Take the CTA when you can. Block 37 connects to the Pedway, and Wrigleyville parking gets hard on Cubs game days.
- Warm up on easy problems and try the tripod position before anything steep.
- For the basics, see our indoor climbing guide for beginners and what to know before your first gym session.
Nearby outdoor climbing
Chicago has no outdoor rock in the city. Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin and the sandstone of Southern Illinois, such as Jackson Falls, are the common road trips, each a few hours’ drive. Check Wisconsin DNR for park rules before you go.
